When hierophants rebel

“Never forget what you are, for surely the world will not. Make it your strength. Then it can never be your weakness. Armour yourself in it, and it will never be used to hurt you.”

Portrait of the hierophant as a young rebel.

Whether you’re looking at generic zodiac correspondence or specific, personal mathematical links, my ruling tarot card is the Hierophant.

The Hierophant is all about spiritual teaching, leadership, and tradition. In Christian-centric decks, the Hierophant appears as the Pope.

The Hierophant is a figure of authority, knowledge, wisdom, learning–and rules. Generally depicted as the High Priestess’s masculine counterpart, this guy loves rules and systems.

As a Taurus with ascendant Virgo, I’m largely programmed to love rules and systems as well. Yet I’m a lifelong rebel and lover of countercultures, with a watery, emotional Cancer moon and an innate distrust of authority figures.

These contradictions, combined with past trauma, have encouraged me to shrink away from claiming my authority and power. As a result, my Hierophant tendencies have tended to burst through as OCD, attempts to control things (and people) beyond my power, and reluctance to communicate about that which I’m not entirely certain of my accuracy and authority.

I’m at the point in my Fool’s journey where I am ready to step into my position of knowledge, authority, and power, approaching it from the point of both humble student and proud woman who has denied her own abilities for far too long. I’m ready to embrace my Hierophant nature, but within the context of my resistance to authority and tradition.

Along the way I’ll delve into my relationships with and passions for tarot, nature, gardening, beautiful things, esoterica, books, music, self-expression, magic, ritual, and whatever else feels relevant along the way.

I invite you to join me as I ebb, flow, and wax (or wane) poetic in hopes of blossoming into the Hierophant I’ve always secretly been.
